“Born to Die” by Lana Del Rey
When not writing, one of the things from which I derive great pleasure is listening to music. I enjoy much of the music of Lana Del Rey, including this track, “Born to Die”,
Instapoetry – is the bubble about to burst
I was interested to read this post on Emma Lee’s blog, entitled, “Instapoetry – is the bubble about to burst?”, https://emmalee1.wordpress.com/2019/07/17/instapoetry-is-the-bubble-about-to-burst/
I do have a presence on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/kmorrispoet/), however, whilst I value those who follow me on Instagram and see the platform as a useful means of promoting my work, I view it as one method (amongst several others) of promoting my poems.
In addition to Instagram, there is, of course this website (kmorrispoet.com), Youtube, Sound Cloud, Twitter and Goodreads, (for links to all of my social media etc please see my “About” page which can be accessed here, https://kmorrispoet.com/about/.
Ultimately its important not to put all one’s eggs in the same basket, and this is why I will continue to maintain several platforms, including Instagram.

When Poetry and Music Merge Seamlessly
I derive great pleasure from listening to music. One of my favourite artists is Ed Sheeran. On listening to some of Ed’s songs I am struck by how closely music and poetry can blend together. Take, for example Sheeran’s song “Happier”
As with much poetry, “Happier” consists of a mixture of rhyme and half-rhyme. However most of “Happier” does rhyme, with “too”, “do” and “new” forming a simple (but highly effective) rhyming scheme as with
“You look happier, you do.
My friend told me one day I’ll feel it too”.
If you listen to the song, you will, I think hear the poetry therein.

Of Churchyards and Owls
Walking through the churchyard, as dusk fell, I heard the note of my old friend the owl. On reaching home I closed my bedroom window for it was a chilly evening. However, despite my double-glazing, the cold cry of the owl penetrated into my modern flat.
Ever since moving to the Upper Norwood area in late 1997, I have always been conscious of the owl. Sometimes he disappears for protracted periods but, as sure as eggs are eggs “the fatal bellman” reappears.
Hearing the owl reminds me of my poem which is, appropriately enough entitled “Owl”,
Forthcoming Poetry Reading and a “Selected Poems”
On Wednesday 13 March, I shall be giving a private poetry reading, along with several other poets. I have a slot of 15 minutes to fill, and I am in the process of determining which of my poems to read. Thus far I have decided to recite the below poems:
I shall be spending part of my weekend in deciding which of my other poems to read.
Sorting through my work kindles in me a desire to publish a “selected Poems”. This is, I think a longer-term project requiring considerable thought and much burning of the midnight oil. It is, nonetheless something on which my heart is set.

Copyright Infringement
It is said that “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. I was reminded of this much used (and abused) saying when I discovered that someone has (without my permission) uploaded a segment of the audio version of my book, “The Writer’s Pen and Other Poems” to Youtube. This is, of course a clear violation of my copyright and I have, therefore reported the matter to Youtube. (Anyone who finds that their work is appearing, without their permission on Youtube can report copyright violation here, https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2807622?hl=en-GB. Please note, I have not given the URL containing the infringing material as I do not wish to drive traffic to the infringer’s Youtube channel.
“The Writer’s Pen” was published in September 2018, and the audio edition (narrated by Alex Lee, and available from Audible here https://www.audible.com/pd/B07KPN5FCH in November of that same year. As all users of Audible will be aware, anyone considering purchasing a book can, prior to purchasing, listen to a sample of the work in question. In the case of the illegal upload of my copyrighted work, the person uploading “The Writer’s Pen” indicates that the whole book is available (for free). However he (or she) has, in fact uploaded the sample segment of my book and stated that the whole work can be obtained at a site offering audio books. In fact the uploader eroneously names a website (other than Audible), and on investigating the site in question no search results are returned for “The Writer’s Pen”.
As stated at the start of this post, my copyright in “The Writer’s Pen” has been infringed and this issue has been raised with Youtube. I am, however puzzled as to the motives of the uploader. Why should they name an incorrect site as the source for the audio version of my book? Are they, perhaps seeking to drive traffic to that other site in the hope that people will purchase downloads there? I don’t know. However I suspect that this may well be the case.
I also wonder why only the sample segment from Audible was uploaded. In this instance, I suspect the answer is that the uploader did not wish to purchase my book, which they would need to do where they to have uploaded it in it’s entirety. The sample is, however free to access and is, therefore an easy target for anyone wishing to infringe copyright.
I will update this blog when I hear back from Youtube.
