A Witchcraft Tour of England #Halloween #witches

A fascinating post. I do wonder whether Matthew Hopkins, the Witch Finder General, really believed that the witches he “found” where (in truth) witches, or did he simply jump on a lucrative bandwagon? There is of course, at this distance in time no way of knowing.

It’s Halloween and that seems like a good excuse to share this post about some of the intriguing places in England with a history of witchcraft.

England has a long and varied history of witchcraft. As a tradition stretching back centuries, it is hardly surprising that there are a great variety of places that abound with legends, stories and histories about witchcraft, witches, persecution and execution. When researching the topic, I came across lots of interesting stories and made a long list of places that I’d love to visit. Some of them I have been lucky enough to visit although I would like to visit again one day. In fact, what I’d really like to do is go on a witchcraft tour of England – spending time in all these places. All offer something interesting and informative; some are fun and have more to do with legend, myth and fairy…

My Date

Her name was Lin.
She was petite and slim
With long, black hair.

Just for a dare
I asked her
To dance.
She did sway
In a most peculiar way.

In search of romance
I took a chance
And invited her back
To mine.

We drank wine
As my black
Cat did purr,
But hold on there
I have no cat, either white or black,
And Lin I haven’t seen
Since the night of Halloween …

When A Respectable Gentleman Called White

When a respectable gentleman called White
Paused by a winking red light
A young lady named Hall
Said, “how angels do fall
And the sky it is starry tonight”.

Early Morning Humour

When a young lady who’s name was Lou
Lost her party shoe
A girl called Anne
Lent her a frying pan
Which she wore instead of a shoe.

A talented young lady called Rose
Decided a poem to compose.
She wrote it all down
And a jolly old clown
Tattooed it right there on his nose.

When a talented young lady called Rose
Decided a poem to compose
A vicar named Night
Smiled with delight
And went in search of his clothes …

When A Vampire Called Miss White

When a vampire called Miss White
Visited me at dead of night
And stood by my bed
In her dress blood red
I wondered if she would bite …!

When a vampire called Miss White
Visited me at dead of night
I offered her rump steak
But she refused to partake
And flew into the starless night

Feedback on my collection of poems, “The Writer’s Pen and Other Poems”

I was delighted to receive the below feedback for my collection of poems, “The Writer’s Pen and Other Poems”, from Alex Lee, who has produced the audio version of the book, (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GD1LBMV/),

“We have just sent you an MP3 file of the fully produced poems for your approval. They are wonderful poems and Mark, not normally a fan of poetry loved them as he was editing and mastering the tracks, as do I. You have a great gift”.

(The audio edition of “The Writer’s Pen” will, I hope be available in November 2018. For the Kindle edition please follow the above link).

As I Walk Through the Graveyard on Halloween

As I walk through the graveyard on Halloween
I shall think on how witches and ghouls
Are only by fools
Seen.

The learned well understand
That there is no ghostly hand
To their progress stop
As they pass the graveyard plot.
Yet I shall quicken my pace
Just in case …
