Barking Up the Wrong Tree

When my dog friend said to me,

“You are barking up the wrong tree!”,

I said to him, “Mark,

I am unable to bark!

And you can not climb that tree!”

When I Took My Labrador for a Walk

When I took my Labrador for a walk

We engaged in a jolly good old talk.

I said to him, “Apollo!

Your stomach is too hollow!”,

He said, “pass me that knife and fork!”

Dogs

On the ground

Logs lie

While all around

Joyous dogs

Spend their day

In play

Unaware of the decay

Of logs

And of how I

Envy dogs

In their play.

My Dear Friend Whose Name is Apollo

My dear friend whose name is Apollo,
Says, “I’ll lead and you will follow!”.
He likes butchers shops
And juicy lamb chops –
As he’s a typical Labrador is apollo!

Dog and Man

The weather
Is bitter
And drear.
Men kill for pleasure
And things that glitter.

My dog sleeps near.
A simple, kindly soul
With no desire
For the cold
Fire of gold.

The Dead Duck

Yesterday I emailed a friend asking whether he fancied a drink on Friday evening. He replied in the affirmative, and went on to say that “Asha has decapitated the duck!”.

I had visions of my friend’s Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy having run amok in Crystal Palace park and attacked a duck, which was now as dead as Monty Python’s Parrot! “Oh god!”, I thought. Then I remembered having bought Asha a squeaky duck from my local Sainsburys …

Dog Bed

The mark
Of your teeth is still there,
On your old dog bed.
I walk in the park,
Where
The dead
Leaves lie.

I
Hear the breeze
And pause by
Trees
You sniffed
‘Ere you where
Cold, and stiff.

Shadows on the grass
Mistook for an old friend.
All things pass,
However much we pretend
Otherwise. You closed your eyes,
And left your mark
Upon my heart

Snowlilie’s Brother – Book Announcement by Author Victoria Zigler

Title: Snowlilie’s Brother

Author: Victoria Zigler

Book description:

“Getting a little brother is a good thing… Right?

When Snowlilie the West Highland White Terrier first meets her new little brother – a Cavapoo puppy, who tells her the humans call him Rascal – and realizes having a little brother means having a new doggy friend to play with, she’s excited. That is, until she realizes it also means sharing everything with him – including her favourite ball, some of her food, and Mummy and Daddy’s attention.

Will Snowlilie be forced to tolerate a little brother she doesn’t like? Or can she learn to like Rascal, and accept the changes having a little brother means?”

Dog and Man

I see the sky
And ponder on biology
And culture, that maketh me.
Or am
I part
Of some great plan
For man?

My dog has a heart
Full of love for me.
He is biology
(As I am),
But is he part
Of some inscrutable plan
For dog and man?

I am told
That my dog has no soul,
Yet he is more loving than
Many a man.

Or is it art
That separates dog from man?
Perhaps we are part
Of some god’s great plan.

In the end
My old friend,
I think there is just
The great sky above,
And dust,
and love.

I Met a Dog Named Joan

I met a dog named Joan
Chewing on a huge bone.
When I said, “is it really your contention
That rats and cats I should not mention?”,
She growled, so I left her well alone!
