There Once Was a Very Wise Old Rooster

There once was a very wise old rooster
Who decided to go for his Covid booster.
, But when he got there
A young nurse named Claire
Said, “this booster is not meant for you rooster!”

(I went for my Covid booster yesterday and, strange to say, not a rooster was in sight.

To be serious for a moment, if you are eligible for a booster, and have not yet had it, I would urge you to do so. The vaccine is helping to keep us all safe. Yes it doesn’t offer absolute protection, but we are now in a much better position than we where prior to the introduction of Covid vaccines).

When I Went to a Swingers Party

When I went to a swingers party
With my friend who is rather arty,
She stood in a corner
With an artist named Warner.
As for me, I’m not that arty …!

Ere I Wrote a Word

Ere I wrote a word
I heard the morning bird
Who knows not of plot,
Yet he
Inspires poetry.

Keats had his Nightingale.
But All hearts fail.
Though poetry lives on
When poets are gone

As I Walked in a Beautiful Hollow

As I walked in a beautiful hollow
A young lady asked me to follow.
She was pretty and witty
And came from the city.
But alas, she was so very hollow!

The Lighted Department Store

The lighted department store.
The welcoming pub door
All attract and distract
Us from the fact
That lights go out
And the merry shout
Of the drinker passes
As the final glasses
Of our day
Are cleared away.

Training with My New Guide Dog Apollo

On 4 November, I wrote about the impending arrival of my new guide dog Apollo, https://kmorrispoet.com/2021/11/04/my-new-guide-dog/.

Apollo and me posing for a family photo

Apollo arrived on Monday 8 November, and I have been bonding and training with him since then. Thus far we have walked to my local Sainsburys supermarket, which is located some 10-15 minutes from my home. Initially the walk took place with Apollo on the lead with me using a white cane whilst accompanied by the trainer from the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. Later walks occurred with Apollo in his distinctive guide dog harness with me accompanied by the trainer. Under UK law (the Equalities Act) guide dogs are allowed entrance into supermarkets and other venues where pet dogs are prohibited. This means that visually impaired guide dog owners can enter such places in the course of their daily lives.

I love Apollo’s soft ears

To reinforce the work of Apollo and other guide dogs, food is used as a reward for stopping at kerbs, finding pelican crossings Etc. The daily intake of food is adjusted to take account of food given as a reward thereby preventing the working guide dog from becoming overweight.

My thanks to my friend Brian for taking the photographs above.

Muddy

By

Kevin Morris

Thoughts muddy
I shall forsake
And take
Refuge in my study,
Among poets who speak
Words that endure beyond a week.

I shall sit listening to birdsong.
The long
Summer days will imperceptibly turn
Into autumn. I shall the world spurn
And yearn
For Keats’ “Nightingale”.

Poets quote #1

I Must Confess

I must confess
That I obsess
On autumn leaves.

The trees
Are bare.

My hair
Has turned grey.

I could dye.
But each man’s day
Must end. my friend
