Born From Stardust and Other Poems, by Victoria Zigler – Book Review

Born From Stardust and Other Poems By Victoria Zigler – Book Review

The title poem in this collection begins as follows:
“We’re born from stardust, you and I,
And that alone’s the reason why
I’m pretty sure that when I die
I’ll join the stars up in the sky.”

Born From Stardust is a beautiful poem, and the book of the same name is a highly enjoyable and thought provoking read.

Amongst my favourite poems is “When Mummy Missed Story Time”, in which the poet poignantly describes the emotional reactions of a young child when it’s mother won’t read a bedtime story due to her fear that she has the Corona Virus, and her very natural desire not to pass on the infection to her son/daughter.

There are several other poems which touch on the pandemic, including one dealing with the impacts of social distancing on the individual and on society as a whole. I can relate to this series of poems, and it is a topic which I have, myself tackled in my own poetry.

Other poems deal with the threat posed by climate change. Again, this is a fine series of poems.

The serious poems are interspersed with lighter pieces such as “When Even the Beach is to Hot”:

“You know the temperatures are too high,
When even the beach is too hot!”

The above poem is especially apt at the moment given the very high temperatures we have been experiencing here in the UK and elsewhere.

I have read a number of Victoria Zigler’s poetry collections, and in my view this is her best thus far.

(Note: I received a free copy of Born From Stardust and Other Poems” in exchange for an honest review)

2 New Books from Author and Poet Victoria (Tori) Zigler

The past 16 months have been quite something, as many of us have noted, and with everything going on in the world, as well as some personal struggles – including a situation where I ended up moving twice in six months, the second time pretty much from one side of the UK to the other, and the death of a family member I was close to – writing seriously took a backseat.

However, despite everything, and even though if you’d asked me I’d have sworn I was getting no writing done at all, I managed to write some poetry, which I was pleasantly surprised to learn when I added them to the handful of poems I’d written but not yet published pre-pandemic, and sat down to create a book out of what I’d written, actually ended up being enough poems to publish two books rather than just one. Well, I suppose I could have put them all in one, but I wanted to publish the specifically pet-themed poetry separately.

Anyway, it’s amazing how those few moments of scribbling down your thoughts all add up, isn’t it?

So, “Pawfect Pet Poems” and “Born From Stardust And Other Poems” have been made available as eBooks and paperbacks, with audio versions planned for the not-too-distant future.

Details for both titles are below, as well as links to some of the places you can find them. Enjoy!

Pawfect Pet Poems

A short collection of poems of various lengths and styles, all with one thing in common: they were written for – or about – some of the various pets my hubby and I have had.

The poems in this collection are mainly about chinchillas and dogs, though other types of animals – in particular degus – sometimes make an appearance too. All poems are captioned with details of the pets they were written for or about.

Victoria Zigler is a blind vegan poet and children’s author. Born and raised in the shadow of the Black Mountains of Wales, UK, she moved away from Wales three times: once to spend six months living in Alberta, Canada, the other times to spend a few years living near Hastings on the South-East coast of England, UK, each time returning to Wales. Now she lives in Wales again, along with a chinchilla named Mollie, a West Highland White Terrier named Lilie, a Cavapoo named Logan, a Hermann’s Tortoise named Artemis, and her Canadian husband, Kelly.

Despite spending far too much time in hospital, and eventually losing her sight to Congenital Glaucoma, Victoria – or Tori, if you prefer – has been writing since she knew how, with no plans to stop any time soon. So far she has published 11 poetry books and 46 children’s books. Tori is also a contributor of the sci-fi and fantasy anthology Wyrd Worlds II, as well as the Poetry Treasures anthology. Additionally, her Hermann’s Tortoise, Artemis, was featured in both the Magnificent Pets Coloring Book For Children and the Magnificent Pets Mandala Coloring Book For Adults.

Vegan due to both a love for animals and dairy allergy, as well as an Eclectic Pagan, Tori describes herself as a combination of Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood from the Harry Potter books: Hermione’s thirst for knowledge and love of books, combined with Luna’s wandering mind and alternative way of looking at the world. She has a wide variety of interests, designed to exercise both the creative and logical sides of her brain, and dabbles in them at random depending on what she feels like doing at any given time, but is most likely to be found playing with her petkids, curled up somewhere with a cup of tea and a book, or trying to keep one step ahead of those pesky typo fairies while writing her own books.

Procrastination – a Guest Post by Author and Poet Victoria (Tori) Zigler

My thanks to Victoria (Tori) Zigler for the below guest post. I meant to post this weeks ago. However, with the need to do housework, answer emails, varnish my toenails and so many other things, I have only just got round to doing so! Did someone just accuse me of procrastination!

We all know how it starts. We have the best intentions when it comes to writing, but then we think of something we must do first, and then… Wait. What happened to the last two hours?

Ah, yes. Procrastination. It does wonders for keeping up with housework, or what family and friends are posting on social media. But it’s not so great for getting that novel written, or trying out that new poetry form you read about the other day.

I used to be fantastic at avoiding procrastination. You only have to look at my list of published works to see that. But nobody’s perfect, and at some point we all stumble on that road to success, and none of us is immune to procrastination, unfortunately.

I’m sure many people have stories from last year similar to mine: I went in to 2020 with high hopes. I’d finally gotten my backlist available in audio. My health was stable enough I was spending more time at home than in hospital. The awful neighbour we’d had living below us was gone. And I’d finally figured out how to make the dogs let me get some writing done most days. It was going to be a great year for writing!

Until it wasn’t.

At first, even with the pandemic hitting, I managed to limp along with my writing plans, despite fighting anxiety issues. Then some things happened in my personal life. I ended up in a situation where I had to move twice in six months, during which a family member who had always been a big part of my life died, both situations made even more difficult to deal with because of pandemic-related restrictions. Of course, it was my writing that suffered for it. After all, with all that to deal with, nobody could expect me to even feel much like writing, let alone actually find time and energy to do so, right?

Unfortunately, while it’s true there are times when other things have to take priority over your writing, and last year certainly held a lot of those for us all, it’s very easy for those reasons to become excuses, and for you to fall in to the trap of writerly procrastination. But, sooner or later, you have to figure out how to take up that pen – or keyboard – and get back to writing again.

With that in mind, here are some tips for fighting procrastination. Many of these have been mentioned by others before, but I know I could use the reminder, even if you don’t need it. They’ve worked for me in the past, so I’m hoping they will again, and maybe they’ll help you too. Feel free to add your own in the comments if I missed any.

1. No matter what’s keeping you from your writing, set yourself a date to get back to work, and stick to it. Treat it like an appointment that can’t be missed, or the first day back at a day job after time off. If life keeps throwing obstacles in your way, or you’re dealing with a situation or change in circumstances with no end in sight, find a way to carve out your writing time anyhow. Sometimes it’s the only way.

2. Make sure everyone – especially those sharing your household – is aware of your intentions, and that they know there’s a day and time they need to leave you alone. Make them respect this, even if you have to resort to bribery. This is sometimes easier said than done, but find a way to make it happen.

3. Don’t answer the phone. Just don’t. If it helps, unplug the main phone, and turn off your mobile. It’s OK to be out of touch for a while… Honest!

4. Do not under any circumstances check social media or eMails during your writing time. Set aside time to do that either before or after your designated writing time.

5. Resist the urge to look things up during your writing session. If you need to know certain facts to accurately write a specific scene, just make a note of it somewhere and move on. It really is OK to do that. That’s the beauty of a first draft. You can plan a research session for another time, when it’s OK if you get lost down research rabbit holes. Now is for writing, and only writing!

6. If you use housework for procrastination, either plan to do it afterwards, or get it done before your writing time, depending on whether you work best after it’s done, or consider certain chores a reward. Hey, some people do view housework that way. Whatever works, right? If you’re like most of us, and it’s the writing that’s the reward, you could even try rewarding yourself with writing time between chores.

7. Make sure your pets’ needs are met, and play with them before your writing time. If their needs are met, and they’ve had some attention from you recently, they’re more likely to let you write in peace. This isn’t guaranteed – some days nothing is going to stop those petkids demanding your attention – but spending time with them first increases the chances they’ll let you have your writing time.

8. Whether you have a room to yourself, share one, write at the kitchen table, or whatever, make your writing space a pleasant one. Ever heard the word Hygge? It’s a Danish concept that loosely translates to ‘cosy’, and refers to that feeling of contentment you get when you’re doing something you enjoy, whether alone or with others. Bring some Hygge in to your writing space and routine.

9. Find your carrot. In other words, find that thing that’s going to encourage you to prioritize your writing. Whether it’s a reward for doing a certain number of words, or for spending a certain amount of time writing, figure out what it is, and reward yourself. Be careful not to make any food-based rewards too frequent though, or your waistline won’t thank you for it. Try focussing on non-food-based rewards.

10. Remember why you write. Sometimes just that reminder is enough to reawaken our enthusiasm for writing, and fight our way free of the procrastination trap. There’s a reason you first put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). Remind yourself what it is.

11. Even if you’re just writing nonsense, when it’s your writing time, write. Eventually habit will kick in, and you’ll manage to write something worthwhile.

12. If you’re struggling to make progress on one writing project, work on another. You don’t want too many projects on the go at once; otherwise you’re never going to finish anything. But having a second project to work on while you mull over a tricky plot point in your main project can be useful.

Writing Blind

This list of writers, who where blind makes for interesting reading, https://blog.bookstellyouwhy.com/from-homer-to-borges-a-list-of-blind-writers. The list includes Homer (although there is debate as to whether the author of the Iliad did, in fact exist), John Milton, James Joyce and Borges.

In terms of living writers, I am aware of Giles L Turnbull, http://gilesturnbullpoet.com/ and Victoria Zigler, http://www.zigler.co.uk/victoria.htm, both of whom are blind. Coincidentally Giles and I attended Swansea University at the same time, and Giles has been kind enough to write a review of my book, “The Writer’s Pen and Other Poems“.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Victoria (Tori) and her husband Kelly. So I am personally acquainted with 2 blind writers.

I myself am also blind and have written about my visual impairment here, https://scvincent.com/2017/02/06/guest-author-kevin-morris-visual-impact/.

While being visually impaired may exert an impact on the way in which writers express themselves, this is not, in my experience a primary determinant as regards their literary output.

As always I would be interested in the comments of my readers.

Kero Audio Promo

I’ve owned birds, cats, chinchillas, degus, dogs, fish, gerbils, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, and rats. Each one has a special place in my heart. But – though I never intended to play favourites – one little dog touched my heart in a way none of the others managed to.

His name was Kero, and he was a West Highland White Terrier.

Well, his name was actually Castellan Keroberous, but that’s quite a mouthful, so we usually just called him Kero. Since it was a mouthful even for us, I figured it would be even more of one for a child, so made sure to just use his name as Kero when I wrote the seven book series of children’s books in which Kero is the main character.

My “Kero’s World” books have been in eBook and paperback for a while, and now they’re also available in audio, thanks to the skills of narrator Giles Miller.

I’m very pleased with the job Giles has done in bringing Kero’s stories to life. I hope, if you buy the audiobooks, that you’re as pleased with them as I am, and that you enjoy the listening experience.

About the author:
Victoria Zigler is a blind poet and children’s author who was born and raised in the Black Mountains of Wales, UK, and is now living on the South-East coast of England, UK. Victoria – or Tori, if you prefer – has been writing since she knew how, has a very vivid imagination, and spends a lot of time in fictional worlds; some created by her, others created by other authors. When she remembers to spend some time in the real world, it’s mostly to spend time with her hubby and pets, though sometimes to indulge in other interests that capture her attention from time to time. To date she has published 8 poetry books and more than 40 children’s books, with more planned for the near future. She’s also contributed a story to the sci-fi and fantasy anthology Wyrd Worlds II.

Now In Audio – The Degu Books

I’ve posted here on Kevin’s blog in the past about the writing of my Degu Days Duo. But – for the benefit of those who may not have seen that post – I’ll briefly recap by telling you that it’s a duology that is essentially a semi-fictionalized account of two different days in the lives of my own four degu boys: Jacob, Jasper, Jenks, and Joshua. Those two books are told from Jenks’ point of view, and my most recent degu book “How To Trust Your Human” – which is a semi-fictionalized account of my attempts at regaining one of their trusts after we lost the first three – is told from the point of view of my last remaining degu, Joshua, under the nickname of “Buddy” (to separate it from the duology it’s not officially part of).

I call them “semi-fictionalized” accounts, because they’re based on real experiences, but since they’re told from the point of view of one of the degus, it’s difficult for me to be completely accurate about events, and they can’t really be considered non-fiction under those circumstances, can they? So, I list them as fiction, and advertise them as being semi-fictionalized.

There’s a fourth book too. One that is entirely fictional, though it was one of my boys – Jasper this time – who was the inspiration for the story, after an escape attempt on his part when I didn’t double check the cage door, and accidentally left it open. In this book, a degu named Oscar takes advantage of an unlocked cage door to escape his cage and explore the world outside of it without humans to supervise him and tell him where he can and can’t go.

You can read all four of them as eBooks or paperbacks, and now – thanks to narrator James Watkins – you can also listen to them in audio.

Working with James has been fun, and I’m pleased with his reading of all four of my degu books. If you buy the audiobooks, I hope you’re as pleased with them.

Regardless of the format you’d prefer, if you’d like to grab copies and explore the world from the point of view of a small and furry rodent, here are the main places where you can buy the books:

About the narrator:
Canadian born James Watkins spent a number of years wandering extensively, studying and working at a variety of exciting things, including surveying in the Yukon, fighting forest fires in the boreal of northern Ontario, sailing on the merchant schooner Avontuur through the Caribean, working as a singing cowboy, and teaching in Central America, to name a few, until finally settling in San Diego, California in 2011. He loves good music, good stories, good writing, fresh air, animals, and a healthy balance between action and quiet time.

Victoria Zigler, Books Available In Paperback

09f242d3toriz

I am pleased to publish the below announcement by my friend, author Victoria (Tori) Zigler:

For those who don’t know, I write poetry, as well as books for children of various ages.

Back in 2012, I started publishing my books in multiple eBook formats. Then, in early 2015, I decided it was way past time I started making my books available in paperback for those who still prefer physical copies of books.

Now, more than a year later, I’m pleased to be able to report that I’m all caught up with my backlist, and every book of mine for which the publication date has been and gone, is now available not just in multiple eBook formats, but also in paperback too.

The eBooks are available via Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks, Kobo, and the other places Smashwords distributes to. Plus, if your local library supports eBook lending, you may be able to find my books as eBooks there (or request that your library orders copies).

The paperbacks are available via CreateSpace, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and any other places CreateSpace books are available from, including any libraries happy to order copies.

Future titles will also be made available as paperbacks as well as eBooks.
