Facade

Outer beauty shows

And throws

Shadows of distraction.

The  magnet feels an attraction

To steel

And is drawn to seal

Its destiny in unholy communion,

A union of empty clang

And bang.

The fine façade

Hides a hard

Truth.

The roof

Is rotten

And forgotten

Woodworm Has eaten through

The fine oak beams

Which, at first sight it seems

Should hold true.

The magnet will rue

The day it did settle

On metal

Base.

Yet to the beautiful face

It is drawn,  As a fly

To the sty,

Where it will wallow

In hollow

Joys, then die.

Rain and Poets

The rain pours
As I read poets long past heeding applause.
Their words will continue to speak
For many a week.
While papers display
Pictures of prancing idiots who have nothing to say.

The celebrities are revered for a while.
Their style
Is all the rage
Until the papers engage
In character assassination.

It is the sport of the nation
To throw stones,
Yet bones are brittle
And journalists loyalties fickle.

Beware for people may find
Behind
Your rictus grin
Your own particular sin!

Poets anthologised stand
As beacons in this troubled land.
While half-dressed celebrities are here today.
They strut and threat
Then fade away.

The Serpent

Swimming in sulphurous waters
With the daughters
Of Eve.
Adam doth grieve
But woman does not deceive
For man does freely choose
His innocence to lose.

Man desires
Paradise
While the serpent sires
Vice
Under indifferent skies.

The serpent lies
Apparently slumbering,
While secretly numbering
Every notch
That does blotch
His once perfect bed posts.

Ghosts
Themselves flaunt
And haunt
The dismal caverns of the mind.

No peace can man find
With the vampire
Desire
For she on herself feeds
And seeds
Lust
In we human dust.

What Does It Mean To Be A Teen?

What does it mean
To be a teen?
At sixteen one may smoke
But may not buy
This means to die,
Which some may say is a joke.

One may not star in films obscene
Until the age of eighteen,
Though sex at sixteen is OK
With a guy
Where the difference in years
Will bring tears
To a parents eyes.
Such is the law in the UK today.

—

In the UK it is legal to smoke at sixteen but illegal to sell or gift tobacco products to anyone aged under eighteen.
Until 2003 it was permissible for those aged sixteen to feature in pornographic material. While the age of sexual consent remains at sixteen, the age at which teenagers may legally appear in pornographic films etc is set at eighteen. It is, however perfectly legal for a man (or woman) in their eighties to have sexual relations with a person aged sixteen.
Some may agree with Mr Bumble that “the law is an ass”.

Derth

Deep in the soul
Where CCTV
Can not penetrate,
A devil does wait
And whispers, “my goal
Is to make you free.
Come with me
Where the light is no more
And see what pleasures are in store
For those who would ignore
Society’s law.

Empty the brain
And do not restrain
Your carnal needs.
Only the herd feeds
On the myth of The Fall.
Pleasure is all,
Come with me
And be free”.

One may look up to heaven above
And call upon God’s love.
But what if we are alone
In our temple of skin and bone,
With only our conscience weak
To speak?
Shall the meek
Inherit the earth?
I fear
There is a clear
Dearth
Of proof
In support of this “truth”.

Slavery’s Stain

The crack of the whip
Does strip
The past bare.
Who would dare
To lift the curtain
For it is certain
To make the sensitive squirm.

Growing up in Liverpool I was told
A tale of how the city was built on slave owner’s gold.
Many there money gave
In the hope their soul to save
To schools and foundations
That dignify the nation.

What can one say
For it is a long way
Back and distance
Leads to resistance
To compensation
For the Caribbean and African nations.
An injustice vast
Stains our past
But should the Europeans of today
Pay for the injustices of yesterday?

One can apologise for one’s own mistake
But what good can an apology make
For a wrong long gone
And done by another one?

Great Britain abolished slavery in 1807
And all was right and god was in his heaven.
No,
The woe
Caused by slavery did persist,
But should one then insist
On the payment of gold
To right wrongs untold?

We can not and should not forget
And yet
We must move on.
The slave owners are gone
And to apply modern morality to the past
Is, perhaps a thankless task.
Can we in conscience ask the guiltless of today
To reparations pay?
And, if so to whom
For the gloom
Has long since closed
Over those
Who where so cruely whipped
And stripped.

Mr Apples

I am not a huge fan of the pop group Madness. However there recently released song, “Mr Apples” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWUisvmZRiw) caught my attention. The song deals with hypocrisy as does my poem “The Hypocrite”, (https://newauthoronline.com/2015/07/26/the-hypocrite/). Madness’s song does, I think make the point with humour and (possibly) a touch of compassion for Mr Apples.
