Touching Words

To hold one’s own book is a wonderful feeling. The tangible representation of one’s endeavours writ large. For most authors the pleasure is enhanced by the ability to read the print editions of their works. However, for me as a blind author (who is unable to read print) the situation is rather more complex. I can read ebooks using the text to speech facility on my Kindle. I can not, however read the print edition of my book, “Dalliance; A Collection Of Poetry And Prose” which sits on the bookcase in my living room. While I still derive pleasure from taking the print edition of “Dalliance” in to my hands, it is not the same as being able to sit in an armchair, flick through the pages and pause at random to read a poem.
I got round the above issue by getting the Royal National Institute Of Blind People (RNIB) to transcribe “Dalliance” from the electronic file held on my computer in to braille allowing me to possess an accessible (physical) copy of my work. Yesterday I sent the electronic file of my latest collection of poetry, “Lost In The Labyrinth Of My Mind” through to the RNIB. I await the braille edition’s arrival with eager anticipation! While I am a huge fan of ebooks there is, in my opinion no substitute for their physical counterparts.

Kindle For PC

LitLoMM

On 11 January I announced the publication of my collection of poetry, “Lost In The Labyrinth Of My Mind” (https://newauthoronline.com/2016/01/11/lost-in-the-labyrinth-of-my-mind-by-k-morris-is-now-available-in-the-kindle-store/).

Following that announcement I was contacted by a potential reader who said they had no Kindle or tablet and went on to ask whether they could still read my book. I was pleased to email back and advise that Kindle titles can also be read using Kindle for PC

Having responded to the query, it struck me that there may be other potential readers of Kindle titles out there who are unsure as to whether (as non owners of the device) they can read Kindle titles, hence this post.

Victorian Classics Don’t Need TV To Sex Them Up – They’re Risqué Enough Already

The Grey Lady Of Allerton Tower

Today I visited the ruins of Allerton Towers, in the company of my mum, her partner and the 2 dogs. On returning to my mum’s home and feeling curious regarding the ruined mansion, I Googled Allerton Towers and came across this ghost story pertaining to “The Grey Lady”, who is reputed to haunt the old house and grounds, (http://www.slemen.com/allertontower.html). I am sorry to say we saw only dogs and their owners during our walk, no “Grey Lady” did we spy. The above story does, none the less make for interesting reading.

“The Light Of Dawn And Other Poems” By Victoria (Tori) Zigler – Book Review

“The Light Of Dawn” by Victoria (Tori) Zigler is a highly enjoyable and thought provoking collection of poetry. The poems range from verse dealing with the passing of the seasons through to poems about the natural world and more humorous verses. In the latter category “The Finest Young Man From New York” made me smile as did the author’s other humorous poems.
As regards the more serious poems in this collection, Victoria’s “Time Stopped” particularly resonated with me,
“I swear this night won’t end
No Matter what I do.
I wish the time would change
Like I want it to”.
We have all, I believe been in the self-same situation of wishing that the clock would move on allowing us to leave a given situation, only to feel that time has become stuck and we must, forever remain trapped.
The author’s poem, “Appearance” also struck me. In “Appearance” she asks why people worry so much about how people look. Why indeed? Are there not far more important issues in the world we should concern ourselves with.
The collection contains several poems dealing with fairies. Children will love these as will adults with an interest in folk tales.

The Robot In Your Bedroom

Several days ago The Guardian published an article (http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/dec/13/sex-love-and-robots-the-end-of-intimacy) regarding the rise of sexbots. There are companies specialising in the production of such things and David Levy believes that such machines can alleviate the lonleness of those who are not in relationships. The growth of sexbots has lead to the founding of an anti sexbot organisation which calls for the prohibition of such robots.
The Guardian article reminds me of my short story, “The Affair” which can be found here, (http://newauthoronline.com/2014/10/26/the-affair/).

Literary Merit

Recently I purchased 2 books of poetry: “I Just Stepped Out” by the late Felix Dennis and “Essential Poems”, edited by Neil Astley. Both works have much to recommend them (Dennis is a wonderful poet and I am currently enjoying leafing through Astley’s anthology). I am, however irritated by the prominent endorsements by famous people carried by both works.
While I am pleased that the great and the good derived pleasure from the books in question this is, ultimately a matter of supreme indifference to me. I will make up my own mind as to the value of a given work and the endorsement (or lack thereof) by a celebrity will not influence my view of the merits(or otherwise) of the book in question. In this media obsessed age the danger is that readers will base their decisions regarding book purchases on the literary tastes of those in the public eye. To my mind the opinion of the lady working behind the counter in my local bookshop caries more weight than that of a celebrity who has been asked for his or her view. Even then I will, in the final analysis make up my own mind as regards whether to buy a particular book.
Both of the above works do (as stated above) contain much that is praiseworthy. However the mere fact that a given work is endorsed by a well known individual should not cause us to conclude that it does, in fact possess literary merit and is, on this basis worthy of our attention.
As a writer I am thrilled whenever someone likes my work, whether that person is a shop assistant in my local supermarket or a photogenic celebrity is of no concern to me. While I in no way blame writers for seeking endorsements, I do worry that it leads to a mindset whereby a segment of the reading public come to believe that just because Mr X says a book is worthy of their attention it is, in fact worthy of their attention. This is, quite patently not the case.
As always I would be interested in your views on this subject.
