Schopenhauer

While on the way to the shops yesterday, I met an acquaintance. As one does in such situations, we passed the time of day. During our conversation my companion thanked me for the print copy of my collection of poetry, “My Old Clock I Wind”, that I had given him. He had he said read it 3 times and intended to read it again. My poetry was, in his view bleak and reminded him of Schopenhauer.

I must confess to never having read Shopenhauer, but the words of my acquaintance kindled in me a desire to read up on the philosopher. For anyone interested in learning more about Arthur Schopenhauer I recommend the above article as a good starting point.

As to whether my poetry does, in any sense chime with the ideas expressed by the German philosopher, I feel unable to comment other than to state unequivocally that I repudiate in the strongest possible terms the anti-Semitic views attributed to Shopenhauer.

Anti-semitism is vile and led to the extermination of approximately 6 million Jews (men, women and children). Sadly there remain those on the far-right of politics who continue to propagate the lie that there was no “Final Solution”. Such denials are dangerous and those who propagate them contribute to the curse of anti-semitism.

Mass Murderers Both

Yesterday evening I bumped into an old acquaintance in the pub. Our conversation ranged far and wide and at one point touched on the atrocities perpetrated by Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. There was some discussion as to which dictator was the worst criminal, with my acquaintance maintaining that Stalin was the greater due to him having murdered around 20 million of his own people. My view of the matter is set-out in my poem, “Hitler and Stalin” which first appeared here some time ago:

The Gulag.
The present like the past is mad.
Black clad figures
Their fingers on triggers.
Russian or Prussian?
An interesting discussion.
Jews and Kulaks their lives lose.
Who to choose?
A man drowning in his country’s blood,
Or one who would destroy Jewry if he could?
What a choice.
History’s voice
is cold and level,
“We allied with the devil,
To destroy his twin,
the mirror image of him.
The world is a better place
But a nasty taste
Still lingers.
Man has burned his fingers,
To often,
History’s lessons are easily forgotten”.

“Faith in Spring” by Johann Ludwig Uhland

I spent a pleasant Friday evening with my friend Brian. At one point during the evening Brian mentioned the below poem, “Faith in Spring”, by Johann Ludwig Uhland (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_Uhland). I must confess to having no German, nor had I heard of the poet who’s poem is reproduced below:

Die linden Lüfte sind erwacht,
Sie säuseln und wehen Tag und Nacht,
Sie schaffen an allen Enden.
O frischer Duft, o neuer Klang!
Nun, armes Herze, sei nicht bang!
Nun muß sich alles, alles wenden.
Die Welt wird schöner mit jedem Tag,
Man weiß nicht, was noch werden mag,
Das Blühen will nicht enden.
Es blüht das fernste, tiefste Tal:
Nun, armes Herz, vergiß der Qual!
Nun muß sich alles, alles wenden.

Faith In Spring

The gentle winds are awakened,
They murmur and waft day and night,
They create in every corner.
Oh fresh scent, oh new sound!
Now, poor dear, fear not!
Now everything, everything must change.
The world becomes more beautiful with each day,
One does not know what may yet happen,
The blooming doesn’t want to end.
The farthest, deepest valley blooms:
Now, poor dear, forget the pain!
Now everything, everything must change.

Goebbel’s Secretary Dies Age 106

The Guardian of 30 January, carries an article regarding the life of Joseph Goebbel’s Secretary, who has died at the age of 106, following a rapid decline in her health hastened by a fall. During her time at the Nazi’s Propaganda Ministry she falsified statistics by exaggerating the number of rapes committed by Soviet soldiers and underestermating the number of German troops killed. Interestingly a Jewish friend died in a concentration camp, while her Jewish lover didn’t survive the war.
A filme (with a book to accompany it) has been made about this fascinating lady.

Antisemitism

As obscene as the breaking of glass,

Or the whisper of gas from the past.

“The jews are mean” you said.

Dead bodies in a camp.

The lamp shines on the food divine.

You drink more wine.

A train somewhere in the distance passes,

Somewhere glass smashes.

The Strange Friendship Between A Jewish Couple And A High Ranking Nazi That Survived The War

An interesting article about a relationship between a high ranking Nazi in the German Propaganda Ministry and a Jewish couple. Interestingly the relationship continued after World War II and the horrors of the Final Solution, (http://www.jewishjournal.com/culture/article/the_flat_uncovers_a_relationship_between_a_nazi_and_a_jew).

Hitler’s Liverpudlian Half Brother

As a Liverpudlian bborn and bred I was interested to read the below article relating to Adolf Hitler’s half brother in respect of the 1911 census, http://blog.findmypast.co.uk/2014/adolf-hitlers-liverpudlian-half-brother-in-the-1911-census/. There are those who claim that the infamous Adolf actually spent time in Liverpool although so far as I have been able to ascertain there exists no historical evidence to substantiate this claim.

I remember, many years ago reading a fictionalised account of Adolf’s visit to Liverpool. There are, almost certainly a number of books written along similar lines but I can not, for the life of me remember the title of the one I read.

Nazi Women

Today’s Daily Mail has a very interesting article regarding “Hitler’s Furies: German Women In The Nazi Killing Fields” by Wendy Lower, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2432620/Hitlers-Furies-The-Nazi-women-bit-evil-men.html. The book sheds light on the women who actively participated in the atrocities of the Third Reich ranging from those who worked in concentration camps through to the secretaries who typed up the paperwork on mass exterminations. The book dispels the myth that women are incapable of such barbarity. I for one will be ordering a copy once it is published on 3 October.

The Rise In Student Prostitution Revisited

On 8 December 2012 I wrote a post entitled The Rise In Student Prostitution (http://newauthoronline.com/2012/12/08/the-rise-in-student-prostitution/). In the article I drew attention to a piece in a student newspaper, The Angle in which the author argues that many of those who enter the world of escorting are naieve (they do not realise that becoming an escort entails the provision of sexual services and by the time the realisation dawns on them it is to late they have, in effect already entered the world of prostitution).

I was interested to hear yesterday (27 February)from a young woman who works as a professional escort to pay for her medical studies in Germany. She discounts the idea that students entering the world of escorting are naieve and describes herself as being sexually liberal and enjoying the company of men (http://newauthoronline.com/2012/12/08/the-rise-in-student-prostitution/). In response to a question from me she states that the other student escorts with whom she is acquainted engage in escorting in order to obtain money (no surprise there then)! She also states that engaging in prostitution entails lieing in order to hide one’s occupation from others.

In my book, The First Time, we meet Becky who enters the world of prostitution, as a professional escort in order to clear her debts and avoid becoming homeless. As with the young lady who commented on my post Becky is far from being naieve. Her friend Julie works as an escort and Becky knows that men who use the services of prostitutes want more than mere company, they do, in the majority of cases expect a full personal service. However understanding what prostitution means at an intellectual level is not the same as grasping the reality of sex work. After her first encounter with a client Becky is violently ill (she feels that she is not a mere receptacle for men to “pour themselves into” and it is this feeling of worthlessness which makes her sick(.

The First Time is the fictional portrayal of two young women’s experience of prostitution. I do not claim that all those who work in the sex industry experience it in the same manner as Becky and Julie, rather The First Time explores a particular set of circumstances which lead Becky to enter sex work and her response to working as an escort. People are individuals and they react to circumstances in diverse and sometimes unexpected ways. I don’t claim to provide an overarching explanation as to why ladies enter prostitution I do, however believe that The First Time represents the lived experience (albeit through fiction) of a section of those engaged in the sex industry.
