The Importance of Independent Book Shops

I am fortunate to live within a 20 minute walk of the independent Bookseller Crow, which is located at 50 Westow Street in Crystal Palace. Over the years I have popped in to the shop on numerous occasions and bought books and art cards as presents for family and friends.

Being an independent bookshop the Bookseller Crow sells a number of titles focused on the history of Crystal Palace and the Norwood area in which I live. In addition, the store stocks a variety of publications by local authors, including my recently published “Passing through: some thoughts on life and Death”. The book description reads as follows:

“In the last week of January 2025, poet K Morris suffered a seizure whilst at home. This was rapidly followed by several other seizures, and the discovery that he was suffering from a brain abscess, which required an urgent operation.

In this book the poet describes his thoughts and feelings as he grapples with his own mortality. Other poems touch on the mundane rhythms of hospital life, and the poet’s yearning to return to the great outdoors and Mother Nature”.

If you live in Crystal Palace or happen to be visiting the area, the Bookseller Crow is a great place to browse for books, so do please consider dropping in. Books can also be ordered from the Bookseller Crow’s website

“Passing through” is also available as a kindle download and can be found here Passing Through: Some thoughts on life and death eBook : Morris, K : Amazon.co.uk: Kindle Store

I am pleased to announce that my book, “Dalliance; A Collection Of Poetry And Prose” is available to purchase from Bookseller Crow in Crystal Palace, (http://booksellercrow.co.uk/). Print copies can also be obtained by contacting me at newauthoronline (at) gmail dot com, (please put “Dalliance” in the subject line). “Dalliance is also available as an ebook from Amazon, (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dalliance-collection-poetry-prose-Morris-ebook/dp/B00QQVJC7E). Below are examples of the poetry to be found in “Dalliance”:

Midnight

Midnight, black as pitch.

No scheming demon, ghost, nor witch.

Only the darkness, which in the human heart resides, manifests itself in cruelty and pride.

Let Us Away

Let us away and make hay,

For tomorrow we must pay.

Let us frolic the live long day,

But tomorrow we must pay.

Fire

I have felt the fire’s power;

It kindles brightly and sinks within the hour.

I have watched the embers dying fast;

Looked into the future and gazed into the past.

I have raked the ashes cold, felt the bleakness in my soul.

In Praise Of My Local Bookshop

I am delighted to announce that my local independent bookshop, The Bookseller Crow (http://booksellercrow.co.uk/) informed me today that they will stock my book, “Dalliance; A Collection of Poetry and Prose”. I had popped in with a copy several weeks ago and was uncertain as to whether The Bookseller Crow would be prepared to take “Dalliance”. However, nothing ventured, nothing gained and, in this case venturing into my local independent book store paid off. I am excited that my book will soon be available for the people of Upper Norwood to browse and (hopefully) purchase.

“Dalliance” is available in both print and ebook format. For enquiries regarding the print edition please email me at newauthoronline (at) gmail dot com. To download the ebook please go to http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dalliance-collection-poetry-prose-Morris-ebook/dp/B00QQVJC7E (for the UK) or http://www.amazon.com/Dalliance-collection-poetry-prose-Morris-ebook/dp/B00QQVJC7E (for the rest of the world).

The BookSeller Crow On The Hill

Some 10-15 minutes walk from my home is the independent Bookseller Crow (http://www.booksellercrow.co.uk/) in Crystal Palace. As a child I have happy memories of visiting WH Smiths with my grandfather to buy clasics by children’s authors such as Enid Blighton, however Smiths is part of a large chain and sells many items besides books. The beauty of shops such as Bookseller Crow is that they specialise in books and are run and/or owned by book lovers. Even if the Bookseller Crow doesn’t have a particular title in stock they are more than willing to order it for you.

The shop also hosts events such as one where the comedian, Mark Steel, who lives locally read extracts from his book and autographed copies.

On a personal level I am grateful to the owner of the store, Jonathan Maine for allowing me to place cards advertising this website, newauthoronline.com in his shop. As an author living in Crystal Palace its great to know that there is a local book shop, independent of the huge chains to which I can turn to promote my writing.
