Out Of Small Acorns Great Oaks Grow

This evening I am meeting friends for a drink and the first round will be on me as I am rich! Well not quite but I have just received notification of my first payment from Amazon (a grand total of £8.86) which covers sales of my e-books in the Amazon Kindle store. Not quite enough to retire to that island in the sun, but out of small acorns great oaks grow. Many thanks to all those who have purchased my books.

Problem With Kindle Countdown Deal Or So It Seems

On 18 December my Kindle Countdown Deal on An Act Of Mercy was scheduled to start. As of 19 December my collection of short stories still appears on amazon.com at $3.54 rather than the reduced price of 99 cents which I set for the duration of the promotion (18-24 December). I have contacted the god Amazon to ascertain what has gone awry but as of now they have not responded. Please accept my apologies if you have visited amazon.com looking to download An Act of Mercy at it’s reduced price. I will update you once I have received a response from Amazon.

Yours in perplexity

Oh To Be In England But Which England?

Many thanks to Cupitonians (http://cupitonians.wordpress.com/) for drawing this amusing post to my attention, http://intrepidmisadventurer.com/the-department-of-tweed-and-trilbies/#.UrIAaOIXKrh. Now I’m off to my gentleman’s club, in Pal Mal where I will sit, in tweed jacket, drinking whisky while being served by my man, Jeeves, (after having read the above post you will understand what I mean)!

Why Sell Your Books From Your Own Website?

I have considered selling books direct from my website and should, perhaps give this some further thought. A useful and interesting post.

In a former blog post: Successful Book Selling – the Non-Traditional Way  we mentioned that authors could sell books from their own website – which resulted in lots of questions how this could be installed and successful managed.
.

Great Benefits for Authors
Take advantage of these three fantastic benefits of selling your books from your own webpage:

  1. You will have higher Revenues
  2. You get paid faster
  3. You will know your readers

.
Higher Revenues
Directly selling means you earn around 85% from your retail price, way more than the maximum 70% you receive from Amazon, and on a 99 cent book or one above 9.99 you get nearly double the amount you would receive from Amazon.  It also helps your readers who live in areas where Amazon requests a surcharge, e.g. in parts of Asia, Africa and Middle East – and sometimes even when customers want to…

Castles

She smiled, awhile I tarried there, fashioned castles out of air. She laughed, set my heart aflame, tis love, or my overactive brain.

I think of her but who is she? A bird encaged longing to be free? Is she content in her cage? Or does she beat the bars with rage? Do I put my thoughts on her? Building castles in the air? Who am I? who is she? Both are struggling to be free.

The Power Of The Dog Kipling

I remember losing my previous guide dog, a golden lab/retriever called Drew, in March 2011. She was well in the morning but, come evening she started to pass blood and a day later my friend was dead. I recollect coming across the below poem shortly after Drew died and whenever I read it I’m overcome with emotion. This poem will, I believe resonate with anyone who has ever loved and lost a dog. They are so, so much more than mere animals.

The Power of the Dog

——————————————————————————–

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way

From men and women to fill our day;

And when we are certain of sorrow in store,

Why do we always arrange for more?

Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware

Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy

Love unflinching that cannot lie

Perfect passion and worship fed

By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.

Nevertheless it is hardly fair

To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits

Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,

And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs

To lethal chambers or loaded guns,

Then you will find – it’s your own affair, –

But … you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,

With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!),

When the spirit that answered your every mood

Is gone – wherever it goes – for good,

You will discover how much you care,

And will give your heart to a dog to tear!

We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way,

When it comes to burying Christian clay.

Our loves are not given, but only lent,

At compound interest of cent per cent,

Though it is not always the case, I believe,

That the longer we’ve kept ’em, the more do we grieve;

For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,

A short-time loan is as bad as a long –

So why in – Heaven (before we are there)

Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
