A cricket ball
Did fall
Into a pristine
Village stream
And was swept away.
And the squire of yesterday
Counted the cost
Of a cricket ball,
Forever lost

Who having reached close of play,
Remarked “I am all bowled out.
There is no need to shout,
Indeed I have nothing left to say”.

Where the languid batsman keeps his wicket.

England On The Eve Of World War I
Sun dappled lawns.
The vicar yawns
As Colonel Trickett
Defends his wicket.
The sound of bat on ball
mingles with a blackbird’s call
that floats
amidst ancient oaks
and the Colonel’s son takes Lucy’s hand
as the sun sets on Angleland.
