Can Books on Poetic Craft Turn you into a Poet?

At the time this post was penned, I had not read Stephen Fry’s “The Ode Less Traveled: Unlocking the Poet within”. I have since done so and can recommend the book. However, my view remains as stated in my post back in January, namely that while books on poetic craft can be helpful, there is no substitute for reading lots of poetry. It is only by so doing that one gains an understanding of the poetic tradition and hone’s one’s own craft.

A couple of days back, I fell into conversation with a jazz musician. We talked about jazz, his teaching of music and the jazz performance I had recently attended at my local pub. On me mentioning that I am a poet, my companion said that he had recently been given a copy of Stephen Fry’s “The Ode Less Travelled: Unlocking the Poet Within, https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003V4AT1C/, and that he had just started to compose poetry.

I have not read Fry’s “The Ode Less Travelled”, consequently I’m unable to comment on the book. I did, however say to my companion that whilst books on poetic craft may, in some instances, be helpful, its crucial to read as much poetry (of all kinds) as possible to enable the development of one’s own unique style. Such reading will bring one into contact with poetry which is not to your taste, however this is, nonetheless useful…

Audio book live

V.M.Sang's avatarDragons Rule OK. V.M.Sang (author)

I am excited to announce that The Never-Dying Man has now been released as an audio book. This means that both Book 1 of The Wolves of Vimar (The Wolf Pack) and Book 2, (The Never-Dying Man) are both available as audio books.

Book 3 (Wolf Moon) is not yet scheduled for release as an audio book, but I hope it won’t be too long.

I am currently doing NaNoWriMo and working on Book 4, Immortal’s Death. I hope to have it ready for the publisher by the beginning of 2022.

For those of you who are not writers, NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. It was begun by a couple of writers in the US who challenged each other to write a novel (50,000 words) during the 30 days of November.

The idea took off, and now it is an international…

Muddy

By

Kevin Morris

Thoughts muddy
I shall forsake
And take
Refuge in my study,
Among poets who speak
Words that endure beyond a week.

I shall sit listening to birdsong.
The long
Summer days will imperceptibly turn
Into autumn. I shall the world spurn
And yearn
For Keats’ “Nightingale”.

The Hungry Hound

I am Trigger.
My Stomach is bigger
Than you think.
Your lunch will be gone in the blink
Of an eye.
Then away I fly.
Should you ask, “who stole my lunch?” I reply,
“Not I”
But, dear reader, I lie …!
I have been known to eat plastic.
My reach is elastic.
You think your food safe?
My friend brace
Yourself for a shock
For I will gobble the lot!
Be it ever so hot!

(The above poem was dedicated to my guide dog Trigger, who sadly died
in 2020, but lives on in my heart).

Kevin’s published poems are available online from Amazon.

He is also featured in an anthology, details from this link.

My latest offer to you.

I enjoyed the first book in this series, and look forward to reading the second.

This will be of necessity, rather brief, as I’m on holiday in the South of Spain, so don’t have access to pretty stuff.

Anyway, the important thing is that the ebook version of The Never-Dying Man,. Book 2 in The Wolves of Vimar series, is available from today until 20th for a mere 0.99 (£ or $ ).

I can’t understand it, but book 1, The Wolf Pack, and book 3, Wolf Moon, are creating more sales than book 2. Who buys books 1 and 3, but misses out book 2? Some important info gets missed out.

Please leave your comments in the comments box. I love hearing from you.

And if you’ve read any of my books, I would be delighted if you would post a brief review on Amazon, Goodreads or anywhere else. It only needs to say if you enjoyed it or not, and if you wish…
