Civilisation

Walking through these sweet scented leaves

I know autumn has come.

A solitary bird

Sings somewhere in the cool air.

While outside these sheltering trees

Civilisation goes on

And a few solitary birds

Sing their song

Of empires long since gone.

You’re welcome, Kevin. The poem might not read as smoothly as you would like because putting a period after “cool air” makes the second stanza a sentence fragment. To make the poem read a bit more smoothly, you could either replace the period with a comma and get rid of the stanza break or keep the period after “cool air,” keep the stanza break, and delete “While” to make the second stanza a complete sentence.
