Tree Surgeon

A tree surgeon said to me,
“I cut away the rotten half
Of this old tree
Leaving the better part,
Which may survive and thrive”.

A thought came to me.
Is not our flawed humanity
Akin to that old tree?
But there has been too much lop
And chop at our poor flawed humanity.

Many thanks for commenting, Michael. My thought was (and remains) that Communists, Fascists, Nazis and other extremists have tried (and still try) to chop and lop humanity into their conception of what constitutes “the good Communist” or the “perfect” representation of the white race. Such fanatics are extremely dangerous and it is their fanaticism (their lopping and chopping) to which I refer in my poem. Trees may need to be managed, but applying the same treatment to humans is not acceptable. Best wishes. Kevin
