Preparing For Poetry Reading

I will be spending much of this weekend preparing for my first poetry reading, which will take place on Wednesday 10 February, (http://newauthoronline.com/2016/01/29/poets-corner/). My colleague and fellow poet, Toby Wheeler has sent me a list of poems he will be reading and it now falls to yours truly to knuckle down and make my own selection! There being so many poems to choose from makes my task difficult. Where I to read all the poems I’m minded to recite the hour allotted to the reading would pass by without Toby having an opportunity to showcase his excellent poetry. Consequently I need to be ruthless as regards my selection criteria.
I intend to read poems ranging from the humorous through to the dark and brooding. I have already determined that the first poem in my latest collection, “Lost In the Labyrinth Of My Mind” which is entitled, appropriately enough “Lost will be read. I am also inclined to recite “Autumn Rain” which can be found in “Dalliance; A Collection Of Poetry And Prose”. Turning to the humorous verse, I am minded to read my poems “She Stood Upon Her Head” and “Shall I Compare Thee”, both of which appear in “Lost In The Labyrinth”.
If all goes well, the event will be videoed and if things go swimmingly the video camera will actually work and an edited version of the reading will appear here!

Below is an article which first appeared on my employer’s website. My thanks to my fellow poet and colleague, Toby Wheeler for permission to reproduce the article together with his poem “Happiness”.

On Wednesday 10 February, Toby Wheeler and Kevin Morris will be reading a selection of their poetry. The event will also provide the opportunity for colleagues to read one of their favourite poems.
Here is a little background about Kevin and Toby.
Kevin has been writing poetry since 2012. His latest collection, “Lost In The Labyrinth Of My Mind” is available as a Kindle ebook. Kevin’s work covers a broad spectrum, ranging from poems about nature through to humorous verse.
Toby was first published at the tender age of 7 in a children’s collection of poems called ‘From a Secret Place’.
However he only started writing poetry seriously after graduating from university and completing a placement at Keats House in Hampstead.
His first collection of poems, “27 years, 27 poems” will be published for Kindle in April 2016.
Toby has also written a poem about OCD for the charity ‘OCD Action’ which is due to be released later this year by the charity as part of a collection of poems about mental health. He is now preparing to send poems for possible inclusion into other poetry collections to publishers.

“I awoke to the rain
drumming on my window pane.
Opening my lattice I let it in
the purifying water that washes away sin.
The hypnotic sound
of rain falling all around.
All my life I have listened to the rain.
The same drumming
of water coming
from the sky
falling on you and I.
The rain has no end
But you and I my friend
May listen for a while
Smile
then pass on by”.

I think I’m happy, I don’t know,
What is it anyway?
Is it something beautiful, a calmness perhaps?
Or an acceptance, a thing we just know?

I think I might be happy,
I couldn’t say, I think I may be sad;
I think I may just be happy to be content,
Yes, content is perhaps enough for me;

Even if I found happiness,
How do I keep it?
And if I did, is it a thing you cannot hide?
For everyone I know who’s happy says so.

I think I may be happy,
I smile and laugh from time to time;
I hope that will suffice,
In trying to find that thing called happiness.

Touching Words

To hold one’s own book is a wonderful feeling. The tangible representation of one’s endeavours writ large. For most authors the pleasure is enhanced by the ability to read the print editions of their works. However, for me as a blind author (who is unable to read print) the situation is rather more complex. I can read ebooks using the text to speech facility on my Kindle. I can not, however read the print edition of my book, “Dalliance; A Collection Of Poetry And Prose” which sits on the bookcase in my living room. While I still derive pleasure from taking the print edition of “Dalliance” in to my hands, it is not the same as being able to sit in an armchair, flick through the pages and pause at random to read a poem.
I got round the above issue by getting the Royal National Institute Of Blind People (RNIB) to transcribe “Dalliance” from the electronic file held on my computer in to braille allowing me to possess an accessible (physical) copy of my work. Yesterday I sent the electronic file of my latest collection of poetry, “Lost In The Labyrinth Of My Mind” through to the RNIB. I await the braille edition’s arrival with eager anticipation! While I am a huge fan of ebooks there is, in my opinion no substitute for their physical counterparts.

I was delighted to receive the below 5 star review of my collection of poems, “Lost In The Labyrinth Of My Mind”,
“This is the third book of poetry I have reviewed by this author, so my expectations were rather high. I did a full reading to get the overall feel for
the poems and the book. This is very much an autumn, winter book of poetry; the time of year when the landscape appears to die leaving one melancholy and
introspective about life in general. But this is not to say that there aren’t some humorous poems. In fact, the poems in this volume seem to cover the
full spectrum of life. And there is one thing which I realized upon my first reading, is that these poems were a pleasure to read aloud like all good poetry
should be. The phrasing allowed the words to roll off the tongue in contentment. One thing I would ask of the reader is to go to the last section of the
book, ‘Why I Write Poetry’ and read this before you start reading the poems themselves. It is my opinion that it will greatly enhance your reading of these
poems and poetry in general. A few of my favorites are, “The Path Through the Woods, The Lost Muse, December, Modernity, Swan, Paris Attacks, and Hurricane”,
to name a few. I highly recommend this volume of poetry by K.Morris”.

On 11 January I announced the publication of my collection of poetry, “Lost In The Labyrinth Of My Mind” (https://newauthoronline.com/2016/01/11/lost-in-the-labyrinth-of-my-mind-by-k-morris-is-now-available-in-the-kindle-store/).

Following that announcement I was contacted by a potential reader who said they had no Kindle or tablet and went on to ask whether they could still read my book. I was pleased to email back and advise that Kindle titles can also be read using Kindle for PC

Having responded to the query, it struck me that there may be other potential readers of Kindle titles out there who are unsure as to whether (as non owners of the device) they can read Kindle titles, hence this post.

I have been busy over the last few days pulling together my latest collection of poems, “Lost In The Labyrinth Of My Mind”. Poems about nature, mortality and the joys and pangs of love are interspersed with humorous poetry.
