There Was A Young Lady Called Mel

There was a young lady called Mel
Who tried her soul to sell.
Said the devil,
“You are not on the level,
As your real name is Nell”!

There was a young lady called Mel
Who dated a man named Snell.
They went to the park
When it was dark
And the rest she refuses to tell!

Cricket

Oh sleepy cricket
Where the languid batsman keeps his wicket.
I well recall
The sound of bat on ball.
Wicket after wicket did fall.
Then with one master stroke
A boy the classroom window broke …!

The above is based on my recollection of a game of cricket in which I participated while attending a school for the blind in Liverpool. We used footballs containing ballbearings in order that those with little or no sight could identify where the ball was (cricket balls would have been far too dangerous)!

There Was A Poet Called Kevin

There was a poet called Kevin
Who said, “It being well after eleven,
‘Tis time, I think
To take a drink.
Yes that would be very heaven!
His friend made reply
With a sorrowful sigh,
“It has only just turned seven
In the morning, Kevin”!
