Tree

A tree may in beauty branch,
It’s leaves in the pure air,
Without a care
Dance

Tuneful birds,
Their song more precious than words
May in freedom sing
And solace bring
To the troubled soul.

The goal
Of girl and boy
Is joy.
Yet how easily does the wind of passion
Fashion
The fine tree in the crooked way.

The leaves say
Words
That cause the birds
To fly away.
One or two may stay
And the tree
By slow degree
Twists so it no longer resembles it’s noble shape.

The landscape darkens
And the vulture harkens
To the tree’s word.
Oh, would that it had gone unheard!

Itch

An itch, once scratched may sleep
But will creep
Back.
The flame
Inflames
And we lack
The will
To be still
So tease
And please the inflammation.

Anticipation
Grows
And on dainty toes
Enters, and does prettily sigh,
“Try
One more time,
For to scratch an itch is truly divine”.
We pine for pleasure,
Act on desire, then repent at leisure.

Walls

A thing done often palls.
Walls
Have ears
And down the years
They hear our tears
And fears.

The wall
May not speak
But as week follows week
It will recall
Each trip and fall.

In the halls
Of the great
And the abodes of the humble,
Walls wait.
This truth I state,
Edifices crumble
And walls do prate …

pride

The better man hides inside.
Pride
As a snake
Does wake
And we forsake
Kindness, that like a river should flow
And lose ourselves in hate and woe.

We know what is right
And oft in the depths of night
Look into our soul.
We ssee the whole
Thing crystal clear.
All our fears
And empty tears.

Let the serpent go
For we reap what we sew.
An open heart
Can not by the devil’s art
Be made black
Only a lack
Of will
Can our soul kill
