Climate Change

Thursday 25th July is predicted to be the hottest July day on record here in the UK (https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/uk-weather-london-set-to-swelter-in-recordbreaking-heat-up-to-37c-a4195211.html), and yet some people (fortunately a dwindling minority) continue to persist in blindly arguing either that there is no such thing as climate change or, if there is, that we humans have very little (if any impact) on the earth’s climate. Humans patently do have a massive impact on the world’s climate and tackling climate change is humanity’s top priority.

The above article reminded me of my poem “Melting Ice”, which is reproduced below:

“Under the once-solid ice sheet
We Meet
A demon some persist
In maintaining does not exist.
Deep in his throat, he rumbles;
And humanity stumbles
As yet another ice sheet crumbles”.

(“Melting Ice” can be found in “My old Clock I Wind and Other Poems” which is available from Moyhill Publishing http://moyhill.com/clock/, and from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0735JBVBG/

    I don’t know how anyone can NOT believe in climate change Kevin. Your poem is great.
    I have been thinking of you and wondering how you are managing in this terrible heat. It is bad enough here but you are even hotter there. Wishing you all the best.

      I agree with you that its difficult to understand how people can continue to deny climate change, Lorraine. Thanks for thinking of me. I am not a great fan of this extreme heat which maybe flows from me having been born in January, during the winter months. I am a huge fan of those cold, crisp winter and autumn days and mild spring weather, not this terrible heat. I am managing OK though, and I hope you are too? My dog is, obviously not a fan of the heat!

      All the best – Kevin

        Yes, our dogs do suffer in the heat. I hope you will both manage ok on Thursday. I will be glad when it is all over. I was born in April so love the Spring.

      Many thanks for your comment and my apologies for the delay in responding. I thought I had done so yesterday, however my response (which was sent by email) is not showing, so second time lucky, hopefully! I agree with you that its difficult to comprehend why some people continue to deny climate change, particularly when the overwhelming evidence (that of experts) indicates that its a grave and growing problem. Best wishes – Kevin

    Global warming is a huge worry. I do wonder if most of the people who deny its existence are those who are impacting it the most, & due to financial gain..I’m sure it is, at least, partly true. It is, indeed, a demon, and another ice age is a real possibility. Maybe not in our lifetimes, although the weather has definitely changed & we may see more extremes happening in coming years. Very thought-provoking, Kevin.

      Thanks for your comment, Debbie. One of the think tanks which is sceptical of climate change is the Global Warming Policy Foundation, which was set up by Nigel Lawson. If you do an internet search for that organisation you will come across some interesting articles on it’s sources of funding/finances. Thanks for commenting. Best – Kevin
