Kevin Morris

Oft of a summer’s day

Have I turned away

To write.

I shall go out tomorrow

And forget my words

In the singing of birds.

But when night

Falls, I shall return what I borrow

From my ever present friend

Old Father Time

And my brief rhyme

Shall reach it’s end.

Kevin Morris was born in Liverpool (UK) on 6 January 1969.
Having graduated with a BA (joint hons) in history and politics and a
MA in political theory, from University College of Swansea, Kevin
moved to London where he now lives and works.

Kevin began writing poetry in 2012. Being blind he uses a standard
Windows computer with a screen reader called Jaws, which transcribes
print into speech and braille.

Kevin blogs at newauthoronline.com, where many of his poems can be
found, together with links to his published works.

Philosophers Disagree On What It Is To Be Free

Shall I confess?
She wore not a dress
But standard issue jeans.
The scenes
Enacted
Impacted
And she
And me
Played our bit part
In this drama of sin.

No words of love were spoken
And the heart
Was unbroken.
Yet one may still regret
Or not as the case may be.

Philosophers disagree
On what it is to be free.
And I think on she
And me.

CONFESSION

I particularly like the first poem which reminds me of the poetry of Dowson.

And now the dark days lengthen
So many friends have gone
I feel my spirit strengthen
Though so much feels so wrong

So many friends have gone,
Too many now to mention,
And so much feels so wrong,
The world is held in tension

Too many now to mention,
I sing my own sad song,
The world is held in tension
For better days I long

I sing my own sad song,
Free from all pretension,
For better days I long,
Time taught me a lesson

Free from all pretension
With those I live among,
Time taught me a lesson
Don’t join in the throng

With those I live among,
There can be no invention,
Don’t join in the throng,
No need to make impression

With those I live among,
I grieve with deep intention,
No need to make impression,
My time now is not long

I grieve with deep…

Lord Salisbury Quotes

“By a free country I mean a country where people are allowed, so long as they do not hurt their neighbours, to do as they like. I do not mean a country where six men may make five men do exactly as they like.

That is not my notion of freedom”.

“A gram of experience is worth a ton of theory”.

“The days and weeks of screwed-up smiles and laboured courtesy, the mock geniality, the hearty shake of the filthy hand, the chuckling reply that must be made to the coarse joke, the loathsome, choking compliment that must be paid to the grimy wife and sluttish daughter, the indispensable flattery of the vilest religious prejudices, the wholesale deglutition of hypocritical pledges”. (Lord Salisbury on electoral canvasing. No politician would, I feel sure venture to publicly express such views as regards the electorate of the United Kingdom today).

Sometimes I Think On Men Of Great Estate

Sometimes I think on men of great estate
Who would, of an evening late
Gaze over the countryside
And wonder whether democracy’s rising tide
Would bring civilisation to an end.

I can not pretend
That there was not in such men
A desire for their privilege to survive
Democracy’s rising tide.
Yet I regret
The idea that any fool
May rule
And I feel in my heart
That democracy and mobocracy
Are sometimes not that far apart
