Morning Rush Hour

Morning rush hour on the tube.
A couple kiss.
“Keep in touch” he says.
“Yeah I will” the girl replies.
They get out and go their separate ways.
I felt like a voyeur
Observing him and her.

I wonder whether
They spent the night together
And if so, did they part
With joy or regret in their heart?

“Keep in touch he said.
“Yeah, I will” she replied.
I know not whether love lived or died
As the tube doors closed on that passing show
And will probably never know.

Life

Walking through the tube on my way home.
Alone
In this crowd.
Would
That I could
Be a cloud
Up above.
Yet we are all clouds
Blown hither and thither by crowds,
Trying to keep our identity in the throng
Whose song
Is “Work then home
Alone.
Perhaps a few drinks with the boys or girls
(the social whirl)
Or collapse in front of mindless television
(watching overpaid hosts
On reality TV interviewing ghosts
Who inspire derision, Not fear).
Sometimes we see it clear
But rather than confront the truth (which is difficult to do),
Instead flick through
Channels where you can shop till you drop
For the latest crop
Of gadgets (not needed before,
But once you saw
You just had to buy)
For one must be a “with it” guy.

Going to bed
Your head
Is clear for a while.
There can be no denial
That you may think
(unless your mind be muddled with drink)
Ere sleep “wraps up the ravelled sleeve of care”,
But beware
For you may dream
And all that does seem
Will be revealed for what it is, a soon forgotten soap opera in which you play
A barely noticed role then fade away.

Mind the Gap

Every working day (in my case Monday-Friday) I take both the train and London underground to get into the office. During my travels I hear a number of anouncements advising travellers to mind the gap between the platform and other important matters. Having a quirky sense of humour I can not help but think up alternatives to these anouncements some of which I have given below. First is the correct announcement followed by my alternative rendering:

Original Anouncement – mind the gap.

My version – mind the gap for the gap can not mind you.

Original announcement – Smoking is prohibited Anywhere on this station

My version – smoking is positively encouraged anywhere on this station

Original announcement – Please do not leave unattended articles on this station. Unattended items will be removed and may be destroyed.

My version – Please leave unattended articles on this station. Unattended items may be removed and distributed to random strangers.
