I recently posted about my experience of using Chat GPT to create poetry, https://kmorrispoet.com/2023/02/13/what-happened-when-i-entered-one-of-my-poems-into-chat-gpt/. In that post I discussed the results of entering my poem Midnight into Chat GPT and how the AI continued my poem (which was originally published several years ago).
This morning I came across this article, https://ai.plainenglish.io/writers-dont-fear-chatgpt-81e1128b11c1
, in which the author argues that writers should not fear AI. Whilst I am sure that Chat GPT (and other AIS) will improve over time, I agree with the author’s view of the matter.
Thank you for sharing the article, Kevin. I just read it and found it encouraging.
You are welcome for the share, Liz. I also found it encouraging. However, I have always been sceptical of “end of history” world views, whether they consist of Marxist views that “Capitalism” will be replaced by a stateless “Socialist” society, or the view that AI will superceed humanity.
IfAI is programmed by humans, wouldn’t have to be programmed by humans to superceed humanity?
Good point, Liz. Unless we follow the logic of some sci-fi (and futurists) who argue that if AI becomes “self aware” it may decide that it doesn’t need us around. However, this seems incredibly far fetched to me. I’m more worried about a terrorist setting off a “dirty bomb” somewhere in the world, or a fanatic releasing a virus in the tube system than I am about killer robots acting of their own accord. I guess you have heard of Transhumanism, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanism#:~:text=Transhumanism%20is%20a%20philosophical%20and,greatly%20enhance%20longevity%20and%20cognition.. If one subscribes to that philosophy then one could argue that people and machines will merge and humanity gain superpowers rather than machines taking over. But then there is, I think a strong argument in favour of the view that Transhumanism is another secular religion as is Marxism, Nazism Etc.
I agree with you about what we should fear. And here in the US, being gunned down in a public place by a lunatic with an automatic assault rifle is a very real fear.
Stay safe and well, Liz. I hope people of good conscience across the political spectrum in the US will come together to find a solution to the problem of gun violence in your country.
Thank you, Kevin. Sadly, the gun lobby has Congress locked up tight.
