A Further Update On Anthology To Raise Money For Guide Dogs

This post is by way of an update on the position regarding the charity anthology to raise money for The Guide Dogs For The Blind Association.

I have now received all contributions together with an excellent book cover (for which many thanks) and I am working with the editor to pull together the final version prior to publishing it online, (the anthology will be free to download with a link on the website and within the book to a “Just Giving” page in favour of GDBA.

One suggestion was to see whether GDBA could endorse the book. I have (today) spoken with the Association who confirmed, over the telephone that endorsement is not a practical option. They have, however e-mailed me as follows:

“Nice to speak to you on the phone and thanks for supporting Guide Dogs. As I mentioned as an option, you may want to use the proceeds to name a puppy after

one of the characters, or someone who inspired the book. There are a variety of levels starting at £2500 up to £50,000 which come with a variety of resources

and perks, all of which come with a photo of the puppy that you could put on your websites and blogs. As I mentioned on the phone, if you continue to fundraise

past the target, we can simply increase the target no problem.

You would need to set up a Just giving page (which I can help you do), and I would assist with wording on this.

If the naming a puppy option isn’t appropriate, we can still set up a just giving page so that we can properly see how much you have managed to raise from

the book as it would be difficult to take this information if we used a link to the main site.

Thanks”.

I would welcome views on the ideas set out in the above e-mail from GDBA. The anthology is a collection of stories, poems and fact based articles so it appears to me that naming a puppy after one of the characters in the book is not an option, (do you agree?). However this does not preclude readers of this blog suggesting a name. With this in mind can I please ask for suggestions in respect of guide dog puppy names? Or would people prefer for monies to go to a “Just Giving” page (specifically dedicated to the anthology but not dedicated to raising money for a named puppy).

I would welcome suggestions please.

Many thanks for everyone’s continuing support and in particular that of my fellow authors, the book cover designer, (Mr Ape), the Editor and everyone who has reblogged posts pertaining to the anthology.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, a giving page in the book will be for donations and will link to a dedicated “Just Giving” page where people can donate directly to GDBA. YYour comment is helpful, its always nice to hear from you. Kevin

£2500 sounds like quite a lot to raise to name a puppy. But, maybe it’s more of an incentive? Without having read it, I would say I don’t think it should be impractical or impossible to name it after one of the characters in the book, but it would involve some work. Either asking people to send you their favourite name, or setting up a poll using some of the characters? Again, difficult to say without having read. It would keep it relevant to the book though, and may help to maintain interest as an ongoing promotion.

Either way would be fine with me, Kevin. It might be a good piece of publicity for the book to have names suggested, on the other hand the high target might deter people. You just never know.
Mind you, given what you are trying to do here, and why, I think to name a pup after one of the characters would be easy enough. You have Trigger and your love for your friend is part of the reason this book is coming to birth. Me, of course, I’d have to go for one of my own girls in the story I sent you, for the same reason… we called her Echo, as my son said she was an echo of love. Which is what your anthology is all about.

I think doing it to name a puppy means the proceeds go to the support of one particular guide dog? And why so much for a name? I don’t get it.

Cost me nothing to name Aragorn and Rico for example and look how famous they are! 😀

I prefer the other option… a giving page. Why they have to break things up, I don’t know… giving is giving and still in support of the same charity. I honestly believe the big charities expect too much these days. It’s almost as if, if you’re not giving thousands or tens of thousands they really don’t want to know. They are too focused upon the quantity rather than the quality of giving.

I’m all for giving, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes they take the biscuit. (Dog biscuit?) 😀

    Giving page it is.

Thanks for your comment Kev and apologies for the delay in replying. I think that the easiest solution may well be to have a “Just Giving” page, for Guide Dogs, minus any reference to a specific puppy. I guess that some people find it easier to identify with a cute guide dog puppy than with the organisation in general, hence GDBA’s suggestion. However, I agree that the puppy option may well be overly complicated. Best regards. Kevin

It does sound that way, Kev. You don’t have to apologise for not replying right away, I don’t think anyone really expects that. I sometimes don’t get to respond for a few days to messages due to work, writing, projects and other things. Cheers Kev.

    Hi Kevin,
I tend to agree that a simple Giving Page aligned to the anthology is the best way to go. Sadly, many people don’t have the time and attention span to read through a puppy naming connection. Keep it simple, and something that people can easily reblog, resend, engage with others, etc. to get maximum exposure. Thank you for all your continued work on this!

Many thanks for your comment and apologies for the delay in responding. I appreciate your thanks very much but without your support and that of others the anthology would have remained a mere twinkle in my eye which may never have come to fruition. I think a consensus is emerging in favour of a page dedicated to the anthology but with no reference to a named puppy. Thanks again. Kevin

I think it would be kind of nice to name a puppy and then follow it through its training until it joins its new friend and home! But £2.5k does sound like rather a lot. It could take a long time to raise that kind of money, although it probably does pay for upkeep and training, or part of it at least. You would probably be better off not tying yourself into something like that, and just let the Just Giving page run. Good luck!

Many thanks for commenting and apologies for the delay in replying. I agree with your view and a consensus appears to have emerged in favour of a general “Just Giving” page. Regards. Kevin
