My friend John sent me the following link to an article in National Geographic regarding how the blind dream, http://phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2014/02/26/how-the-blind-dream/. Having lost most of my vision at approximately 18-months-old as a consequence of a blood clot on the brain I was interested to read the results of the research which included both sighted and non-sighted participants.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the study for me was the finding that blind people appear to experience more nightmares than sighted people. Such nightmares included being hit by a car and losing their guide dog which are, as the author of the article states very real threats if you happen to be blind. Next time I meet up with my friends all of whom are sighted I’ll be sure to ask them about their dreams although certain types of dream are, no doubt better glossed over …
This is interesting. I do have a lot of nightmares, but they’ve never been about getting hit by a car. In fact, they’re usually about me driving a car and how nervous I feel doing it with low vision. I’m curious whether you personally have had similar nightmares as the study.
Many thanks for your comment. I have lost my guide dog, Trigger in reality but I don’t recollect ever having dreamed about losing him. I have nightmares fairly often but seldom recollect what they concerned. How much can you see? I can see outlines of objects but I am not able to pick out detail so, for example I can see that a person is present but I wwouldn’t know whether it was a friend or family membe unless they spoke to me. r
This is something that I never thought about Kevin. I dream every single night from the sublime to the ridiculous. One dream that I had a couple of nights ago has stayed with me and it is haunting me! LOL. 🙂
Hi Jade. Dare I ask what the dream was about? It will, I promise stay strictly between you and I together with anyone else who happens to pass by my little corner of the internet, LOL! Seriously you are, of course under no obligation to tell me about your dreams but, if you do I can provide a solemn undertaking they will find their way into my next book – is that a lawyer’s dulicit tones I hear! Thanks for your comments,
You know what Kevin, if I wrote down every single dream I would have a whole book. I remember them all every morning and some of them stay with me for a while. Like this one. I will happily tell you.. but I may blog it. If I don’t then I shall email you and tell all.. 🙂
I look forward to hearing about it either on your blog or via e-mail. It would be fascinating if we could record our dreams as one might record a scene using a camcorder.
I have blogged it Kevin and it will be out on Wednesday. I have a feeling that you will be terribly disappointed! LOL.
Oh couldn’t you make up something salacious just to keep us all entertained … Seriously I’ll look forward to reading your post on Wednesday.
You have to read my books for the salacious stuff Kevin! 🙂
I am looking forward to the sequel of “12 Days”
I am working on book three now as well. 🙂
Interesting article. I am sighted but I have more nightmares. I also have very vivid and bizarre dreams.
That is interesting. I often wish I could remember my dreams and (yes) my nightmares also. Apparently a dream which seems to go on for hours can, in reality take place in a matter of minutes so rapidly does the brain operate! Thanks for your comment and, remember life is but a dream.
Haha. I have often thought that we have no definitive proof that I’m writing this comment in a dream and those “dreams” are actual reality.
