Mums The Word

An interesting expression
Is “the world’s oldest profession”.
Many a confession
Has the priest heard.
Mums the word.
He knows the flesh is weak
And will not speak
Of the desire
Burning in peasant and squire,
For discretion
Is his profession.

Thank you for liking my poem and for commenting on it. The poem plays with the debate as to what occupation constitutes the oldest profession. Some say agriculture, others that of working girl or prostitute, while priest is also mentioned (the latter profession is, of course older than the Christian church as it dates back to Pagan times). Man is imperfect, hence the reference to the flesh being weak. The poem is part humorous and part serious. Kevin
