Who-will-you-vote-for-

You nominated in your hundreds – literally! I had to enlist a committee of fabulous bloggers (Ali, Geoff and Hugh) to help organise all the nominations and sort them into this, the official voting post. To find out more about the #BloggersBash event have a look at this, this or this.

The lovely Geoff decided we needed to stand out from the crowd so that y’all can find us at the British Library on the 1st August. So he has ordered some Annual Bloggers Bash t-shirts. The committee will be wearing them, but it was cheaper to bulk buy, so inevitably we have spares. SO, if you win one of the awards then a t shirt is yours! But if you would like a t-shirt anyway then they will be £6 on the day. Geoff is…

Do Amazon’s Book Review Policies Hurt Independent Authors?

How Amazon’s New Book Review Rules Impact Self-Published Writers

via IB Times

Success, it’s been said, is all about who you know — just don’t get to know too many people unless you want the world’s largest online book publishing platform to penalize you for it.

Thousands of independent authors are asking Amazon.com Inc. to change a controversial policy that prohibits users from reviewing books written by people they personally know. The policy is meant to cut down on the willful shilling of books by close friends and family, but members of the relatively insular independent publishing community say the rules are restricting their ability to offer or accept honest criticism from others in their peer group. They also say the detection system is highly flawed, and as Amazon has gotten more aggressive at policing it, perfectly legitimate reviews are getting caught in the algorithmic crosshairs.

Dating Disabled

An interesting post from a visually impaired lady on dating. Her partner is sighted. Kevin

Jessica N and Makiko's avatarPawsitively Blind

Dating as a person with a disability can be quite tough. There are many dating sites out there for people with disabilities to help them date. Unfortunately, there are also some sites out there that are just gross too and prey on people with disabilities. Some people are big fans of using dating sites as a person with a disability. I have had several friends (with or without disabilities) that have had a huge success with them. However, I just don’t think they are for me. I am too paranoid (Thanks Mom and Dad :)) to use a dating site because really, I don’t know who is at the other end. I also am visually impaired and feel as such, I could be in danger’s way even more. I have a good friend though who is completely blind and uses dating sites and just meets up in a public place…

#Read about Guest #Author Lucy Brazier

I have had the privilege to feature Secret Diary of Porter Girl on this blog and can recommend taking a look at the website together with reading Lucy’s book. Kevin

Chris The Story Reading Ape's avatarChris The Story Reading Ape's Blog

naughtylucy2Hello there, I am Lucy Brazier although some you may know me as PorterGirl, from the Secret Diary Of PorterGirl blog. I have just released a book of the same name and Chris has kindly invited me along to say a few words about it.

Like many of us who peruse these eminent pages, I came to writing quite young and often wrote stories for my school friends, usually featuring ourselves as the heroes. I wrote a lot of science fiction back then, I have no idea why. My Mum has kept many of these illustrious tomes and they are delightfully bad, as you might imagine.

Once into adulthood, I didn’t write much for many years, apart from a song or two here and there and my dream of being an author was all but forgotten. Until, that is, I randomly took a job at an Oxbridge College as…

Answers every Retail worker wants to give

This is a great post and obviously comes from the heart. Many retail workers put up with a great deal from customers. However the interaction between store employee and customer cuts both ways.
Retail worker to me: “Can I help you?”
Me: “No, I have just been standing in this queue for the last 10 minutes purely for the good of my health”.
Particularly stupid store security guard to me: “Is that a guide dog?”
Me: “No, I am pretending to be blind and dress my dog up in his distinctive white harness purely for the fun of the thing”.
I have never, I hasten to add said these things, however stupidity does cut both ways.

Dumb Customer

Q: “Excuse me, do you work here?”

A: “No, I absolutely love this mass produced, sweat box uniform, so I just wear it for the crack.  Also, I love voluntarily getting on my knees in random stores and helping out obnoxious, rude people for free.”

Matrix Prices

Q: “How much is this?”

A: “Hmm, I don’t know.  Let me just consult my onboard computer and access my worldwide price App that I have built in.  I had no idea I looked like a walking price-list, I must talk to my plastic surgeon.”

Q: “Where are the toilets?”

A: “Well, if you follow the huge directional signs that this particular company has spent thousands of pounds on perfecting to ensure people like you can find them, it’ll take you right there.  I know, I know, its extremely silly of me to think that you could lift your head and look for yourself.”

Castles

K Morris Poet's avatarK Morris - Poet

She smiled, awhile I tarried there, fashioned castles out of air. She laughed, set my heart aflame, tis love, or my overactive brain.

I think of her but who is she? A bird encaged longing to be free? Is she content in her cage? Or does she beat the bars with rage? Do I put my thoughts on her? Building castles in the air? Who am I? who is she? Both are struggling to be free.
